Dance Party

Have you ever had a dance party with your kids? If you have, then you know how much of a workout it can really be. Turn on some of your favorite tunes and take turns showing off your moves. You can make even more of a game out of it by copying each other’s moves or having some dance battles. You’ll get so lost in the fun that it won’t even feel like work!

Workout Videos

There are so, so, so many workout videos on Youtube that are family friendly. Pick some areas that you want to work on – cardio, stretching, strength training – and find videos that will help you in those areas. Kids are great imitators and will love to copy the person on the video. It will entertain and keep them active while helping you get in your daily workout. The best part is, if you only have time for a short 10-15 minute workout, you can pick a video that is only that long!

Obstacle Course

Build an indoor obstacle course for you and your kids to run through. This can be as simple or complex as you want to make it. You can build a blanket tunnel with chairs and blankets (or cardboard over the chairs) to crawl through. Use masking or painters’ tape to build a hopscotch board. Jump through a hula hoop. Bear crawl across the floor. Find things around your home that would make a for a great obstacle in your course. Take turns timing each other, or make it a relay and go one after another until you’ve all tired yourselves out.

Follow the Leader

If you really want a workout, try keeping up with your kids for a few minutes out of the day. Play follow the leader with them, letting each person take a couple minutes to pick a fun activity to do that everyone else has to imitate. Jumping jacks, sit-ups, bear crawling, frog hops, crab walks, and any other action that keeps you moving are all great for this activity. You can even reward the child who comes up with the most creative action.

This is a great activity to do before bedtime, or when you need your kids to just wind down a little. Pull out some yoga mats, or just do this on the carpet, and lead your kids in a yoga class. You will all benefit from the stretches and poses that the yoga routine provides. You can even find kid-friendly yoga routines on Pinterest and Youtube if you need some good ideas.

There are plenty of ways to stay active without even leaving your living room. It just takes a little willpower and creative thinking to get you there.
