5 ways to avoid taking your kids to the dentist often

Taking your kids to the dentist is super important.

From an early age you can create that habit and hopefully, by doing so you can prevent many future problems with their teeth and keep them healthy and strong through their childhood and beyond.

But there can be times when it seems that instead of taking your child to the dentist once or twice a year, you are taking them every couple of months or even every month.

Not only does it make your child dread the dentist, but the cost can add up as well.

Here are five ways to avoid taking your kids to the dentist more than is necessary, but still keeping their mouth and teeth healthy and strong.

Start the brushing habit early

As soon as their first teeth start to appear, start the habit of brushing their teeth.

The more teeth they grow the more aware they will become and the more you can teach them about this essential habit. Help them to understand how long and thorough they should brush and that they should do it at the very least twice a day, but more if they like is great too.

Don’t forget to floss

Seeing as cavities are one of the most common and preventable chronic health problems with children in the United States, according to the Center for Disease Control, brushing alone is not going to cut it when it comes to preventing those unnecessary dental visits.

Nowadays they have many nifty tools to help teach your kids how to floss their teeth. Until they are around four or five, or maybe even a little bit older, you will probably have to do the flossing for them. But once they can get to the age where they do it themselves you can still guide them along.

If you have any questions about flossing technique you can ask your local dentist, like Alligator Dentist, the best way to do it.

Try not to give sugar before bed

A great tip for healthy teeth and fewer cavities for your children is to make sure they only drink water before they go to bed.

This means it’s usually best to avoid things like juice or milk, and that’s because the sugar and acidity, especially found in juice, can lead to the erosion of teeth and create cavities. This can lead to more unwanted visits to the dentist.

Still go to the dentist

Even if it seems that you are taking your kids to the dentist a lot, it is still probably best to take them and make sure everything is in tip-top shape in the long run.

If you follow the above steps you probably will find however that you will only need to take them the recommended one to two times a year.
